Simon has pioneered fundamental research into resistance to plant fungal diseases and in both plant and fungal genomics. He has published widely in some 31 journals and collaborates with researchers in each continent. At the CCDM, he leads a team investigating two important disease of barley, the spot and net forms of net blotch.
