DataHarvest, a partnership between the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and Curtin University, will develop expertise to advance the management of grains research, development and extension (RD&E) data for Australian grain growers.

The initiative aims to equip GRDC’s research partners with the tools, skills, and knowledge necessary to improve the collection, management, and sharing of RD&E data, with a particular emphasis on increasing data accessibility and reusability.

Face-to-Face Workshops

The DataHarvest team deliver tailored face-to-face workshops, online data management resources and a dedicated Support Services Centre to GRDC’s research partners.

DataHarvest workshops have now been delivered across Western Australia, South Australia, Central New South Wales, and Southwest Victoria. Seventeen grower groups and small service providers are now trained in GRDC’s key RD&E data management activities, enabling them to confidently collect, manage, and appropriately share grains RD&E data in a standardised manner.

The FAIR Principles

Research data should be managed in accordance with the FAIR principles, which focus on making data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. These principles provide a framework for managing, collecting, and sharing data, including after the conclusion of a contract or project. The FAIR principles are widely adopted internationally due to their ability to support data governance, long-term data protection, and reuse.

Throughout the workshop, research partners learn how the FAIR principles form the foundation of the GRDC RD&E Data Management Policy and are integrated into key data management tasks. There is a strong emphasis on data collection and storage, metadata collection, uploading data to repositories, and registering project metadata with the GRDC Data Catalogue.

Effective data management is essential for ensuring that research findings are efficiently shared, avoiding duplication of effort, and accelerating the delivery of new knowledge to growers. By standardising research data management across the industry, DataHarvest seeks to increase the value of existing datasets and enhance research outcomes, ultimately benefiting Australian grain growers.

An additional objective of the DataHarvest project is to provide hands-on data management support to small service providers who may not currently have access to a data management support network.
